JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF THE NORTH SHORE & COHEN HILLEL ACADEMY
Discovery is a collaborative summer program for students entering grades 1-4 that continues to bring together the best of two institutions “on the hill”, Cohen Hillel Academy and the JCC of the North Shore. Discovery provides a full day of enrichment activities, encouraging each child to reach his/her potential. Discovery activities offer intellectual, creative, and recreational opportunities in a warm and nurturing environment that will challenge each child to discover something new about the world and him/herself.
All Discovery programs will meet at Cohen Hillel Academy in the morning where the students will have full use of Hillel’s facilities including classrooms, science lab, library, music room, kitchen, art room, multipurpose room and computer lab. After lunch, for full day campers, the Discovery Program continues at Camp Simchah in Middleton. The afternoon will be spent on the rustic campsite where activities will include a variety of recreational camping programs such as recreational swim, sports, Judaics, music, Israeli culture, arts and crafts, ceramics, special events and electives. (Please consult the Camp Simchah brochure for a detailed description of facilities.) Students will leave camp at 4:00 and return to Marblehead or Peabody by bus. Students may choose to participate in the morning program only at Cohen Hillel Academy. All half and full day campers will eat lunch together. Depending on interest, we are considering offering a third alternative. Campers could stay in Marblehead after lunch, have free swim at the JCC outdoor pool and return to Cohen Hillel Academy or the JCC for an hour of additional recreational or creative activities. This camp option would end at 2:00. If you are interested in this option, please contact Ellen Lodgen as oon as possible. If there is sufficient interest, we will determine the cost and go forward with another exciting option for Discovery campers.
Week One: AT THE IMPROV
Participants will be spreading their thespian wings. They will experience activities in movement, music, scenery production, skits, stage makeup, improvisation, etc. There will be a small presentation at the end of the week that guests can attend. The teacher will help each camper find their unique dramatic voice and encourage them to reach deep into themselves to play a variety of roles in skits and improvisational pieces.
Week Two: DISCOVERY CULINARY INSTITUTE
This week is a fabulous opportunity for campers who want to learn their way around a kitchen. There will be lessons in nutrition, the proper use of cooking utensils, how to set a table and the planning of balanced meals. Try your hand at cooking a great breakfast. Choose some ethnic recipes such as Chinese, Indian, Israeli and Mexican. Learn to bake bread. Of course, there will also be some great desserts. Take a risk and make up your own recipes to try. Come to camp this week and you will be able to take over the family kitchen!
Week Three: LET’S GET PHYSICAL
What makes a good paper airplane? Did you ever try to launch a rocket? What are the acids and bases you can find in your home? What are the properties of matter? How do different kinds of rocks and minerals form? How can a small child lift a heavy weight? Does salt really make water boil faster? Is white light really just white? Which dish detergent cleans the best? Which paper towel absorbs the most water? Discovery participants will delve into astronomy, simple machines, chemistry, physics and geology as they investigate the world of Physical Sciences.
Week Four: LOOK ALIVE
How do the many systems of your body work? Is there anything worth seeing in a drop of water? What are the properties of living things? What is necessary to makeseeds germinate? How does water get to the top of a tree? What is a virus? Just how clean are your hands? How clean are the many surfaces you touch each day? What is so special about the beautiful ocean that is right nearby? What is in a tide pool? Look into all these and so much more as you investigate the world of Biological Sciences.
